3 things to do in Chicago this holiday season
/I could be a little biased because I’m from here, but I think Chicago is one of the most beautiful places to be during the holidays. The snow is falling, the twinkle lights are sparkling and hopefully the temperature is above freezing (lol).
Since I grew up going into the city at Christmas time, I thought I’d share 3 of my favorite things to do this time of year.
Check out the windows at Macy’s on State Street
I grew up visiting this store and marveling at the magical windows that are transformed during the holidays. Macy’s has been decorating its windows for the past 51 years! It takes a team of painters, welders, costume makers, carpenters, etc. to make the windows come to life
Once you’re done looking at the windows head inside to warm up and shop! Oh, and you can’t forget to check out the 45 foot tree inside. If you want to make a whole day out of it you can reserve a table at the Walnut Room and dine right next to the magnificent tree.
Pro tip: make your reservation well in advance, the best seats in the house book up quick!
Do some shopping at the Christkindl Market in Daley Plaza
There is no better place to experience a traditional German Christmas Market without actually visiting Germany. The Christkindl Market is full of shops selling ornaments, gifts, souvenirs, delicious food, the list goes on and on!
Personally my favorite thing to get at the market is the spiced wine in the collectable mug.
Eat Elf Spaghetti at the Virgin Hotel
Yes…you heard correct. Miss Ricky’s restaurant is serving up the sinfully sweet dessert Buddy makes in the classic movie Elf. The hotel is celebrating the 15th anniversary of the movie (don’t you feel old now?) by serving up this dish.
Curious about what’s inside? Get ready, it’s a long list: strawberry and raspberry sauce, marshmallows, s’mores pop tarts, M&Ms, Oreos, Fruity Pebbles, coconut, syrup and chocolate sauce.
The dish is unsurprisingly sweet and really crunchy. And while I don’t think I have the stamina to finish the entire dish, I think it’s a must order this time of year. Hurry up though, it’s off the menu after Christmas Day.
If you find yourself in Chicago this time of year I hope you find this list helpful! If you do visit any of these spots, don’t forget to snap a picture, share it on insta and use the #galsabroad so I can see you having some holiday fun! Oh, and if you’re a first timer, don’t forget to bring a warm coat. Chicago in the winter time is no joke!
