How to Drape a Saree-Alle Abroad

Sooooo…. Let me just state facts. Wrapping a saree is NOT EASY. BUTTTT I wanted/needed to learn how to wear one so I could show off my super fly saree in India. That being said, I had no idea how many steps it takes to get it all wrapped up. But I’m not one to shy away from a challenge and I was determined to learn how.

For those of you that don’t know a saree or sari is one of the most common pieces of clothing worn by women in India, Nepal, Sri Lanka and other countries around the world. Basically it’s a REALLY long piece of fabric (usually about 6 yards long) that’s draped and wrapped in a variety of ways. The practice of properly draping a saree is an art form. LITERALLY. But the pros can usually wrap theirs in about 5 to 10 minutes. The first time…it took me an hour.

Sarees are worn for a ton of different occasions. Daily wear, parties, weddings, etc.

I have to admit this whole experience TOTALLY put me outside my comfort zone. But that’s what’s so cool about learning and experiencing different cultures. Even buying the saree was an experience.

In Chicago, there’s a street called Devon Avenue. It’s the Mecca for Saree shops and delicious AUTHENTIC Indian restaurants. My mom (Linda) and I went there to buy sarees. And let me tell you, I felt like I didn’t have a clue what I was doing. Thank goodness for the sweet shop owners who explained the different fabrics, and the undergarments you need to buy.

I mean think about it. We’re so used to going into a store and seeing pants, tops, coats etc. But then you walk into a store and there’s shelves upon shelves of bright colored fabric and that’s about it. Might be a little confusing right? When I was selecting my saree I kept putting the blouse on backwards with all the jewels in the front. I had no idea that when wearing a saree you want the jewels in the back so they can be seen. LOL I was so lost.

Despite my lack of knowledge, I found the most beautiful pink saree embroidered with gold sticking and jewels. It was EXACTLY what I was looking for.

If you ever find yourself traveling to India or attending an Indian wedding, I highly recommend getting a saree of your own. They’re so beautiful and surprisingly comfortable. And unless you have a friend who is an expert at draping a saree, I might suggest watching this girl’s video. It’s super helpful and I still refer back to it when I wear mine.

Okay, time to jump off because I officially leave for India in a few hours and I still have some things to pack. YIKES!!
